I was having a gander at Ben Kay's blog and saw this VW ad. Such a brilliantly simple but sweet idea that genuinely put a smile on my face. I've had 3 beetles. The first was a red Mexican one I think. The engine set on fire before I even passed my test so that didn't go anywhere. The second was racing green just like the one towing the school bus in that ad. It had porsche bucket seats and a tiny steering wheel. It was great! My Dad taught me how to drive in it. He said I was shit at reversing so he'd get me to practise reverse figure of eights in Aldi car park when it was empty. Eventually that little baby got sold. But wait! Beetle numero tres was to be loved. Metallic blue with a dope number plate. I replaced the gear stick a baby dolls arm and managed to drift it once. I remember giving a lift home to some cheeky kids who had walked miles to the skatepark only for them to thank me by getting Pink Panther wafers all in the seats. Fuckers. When it came to leaving for uni I thought I wouldn't need a car so I sold the beetle. I was wrong. I did need a car. But for the sake of reliability I got a purple Suzuki Vitara. Pretty fun but ugly as hell when I think about it. And more prone to breakdowns surprisingly. Scrappage.

Then something amazing happened. The old racing green '67 came up for sale daaan Saaarf. My Dad bought it back for me as a present. Spoilt much? The bucket seats had gone sadly but it was still a beauty. That car saw plenty of adventures before I did a straight swap for a pristine Notchback. Best swap ever. My little brother bought my old beetle from the guy I swapped it with and wrote it off. The end.

Yesterday morning I was listening to hot92.fm earlier than I normally do. They were doing rap versions of times tables for all the youngsters on their way to school. Here's an example of the lyrics:

Me and about 8 of my housemates, by pure surprise, won the pub quiz last night. When they announced our name we literally went crazy because we thought we had no hope. All I managed to contribute to was the drawing round. The £30 bar tab went down well and I suspect it brought our pikey family even closer. :)

Hello! I've had a tiring but fun start of the week doing a video shoot at Junction Eleven the last 2 days. Listening to 90s RnB with Si Cox, using nice equipment, getting tipsy and being allowed to make an absolute mess of the studio. Can't ask for better really. I won't say too much right now but I will tell you that it's going to be very colourful!
When I got to work this morning I had brilliant delivery from America. A Fourstar air freshener of Mark Gonzales' face! That probably doesn't mean anything to a lot of you but it has made my day! YUS! My car gonna be smellin sooooo goooooood AND looking fly. I don't think I'll ever chuck it away...

Good morning world. It was hard to sleep last night because I don't have any curtains and the full moon was beaming through. I saw two foxes run across my garden this morning which was pretty cool. By the time I thought to get my camera they had scarpered but if I had taken a photo it would've had the same eery quality as Peter Sutherlands photographs in 'Buck Shots.'

In other news I have started jogging. LOL. I'm hoping to keep it up because I bought running gear to make me. I really like how other joggers will just say hello to me in the park now. I have been accepted into the jogger secret society! I've even bought some actual running shoes rather than my 50p Nikes just to keep up the facade. I'll update you in the weeks to come.

More news in a nutshell. A short interview with my brother was on a Channel 4 ad break on Monday talking about his Redbull Canimation entry. Sadly I missed it.

Hello.
So it's the last month of 2011 and I'm into day 6 of my Thorntons advent calendar. It's great that some of you still actually read this especially with my lack of posts in the past week so for that I say thank you. :)

Ok so for some news. Firstly, BIG congratulations to my younger brother Ben for making it into the top 10 finalists of the Redbull Canimation competition! He's in the student stop motion category and if he wins it he'll be doing an internship at Aardman. Fingers crossed! Huge thanks go out to everyone who voted for him. (You can watch his entry if you go back onto my previous posts.)

Last week me and Jenny were doing a bit of reporting for the staff xmas party. It's top secret though so I can't tell you what we're doing but here's a sneak peek.

Yesterday I went Christmas tree shopping but sadly no luck. These robot wolves were all warm though!!!

This week I'll hopefully be going on a test shoot involving lots of UV paint! Fun fun!

Redbull Canimation Competition

Redbull Canimation is a nationwide competition to create a short animated video to promote Redbull. The winners get the chance to have their video shown on Channel 4 as well as in cinemas across the country. They also receive internships at some of the top agencies in their category.

My brother Ben has entered the stop motion category and he needs your votes! I'm not just saying this because I'm his sister but his entry is wicked! The set design and actual concept involved is extremely well thought out, just see for yourself...

The voting process is a bit weird on this one though. Redbull want you decide the top 10 by watching and interacting. The more buzz the animation gets, the higher it'll rise. So if you really like it, share it with your friends, watch it every morning, drop in a comment to tell Redbull (and my bro) how much you like it. Basically, the more love you give an animation, the closer it will get to the top 10.

Don't know whether it's because I had a bad sleep but I feel a bit like a shell of a person today, picked up and put in the wrong place. At 2am my iphone scared the hell out of me by the voice control randomly coming on despite being laid flat and untouched on the side of the bed. I turned it off still half asleep and not taking it in but then it woke me up again when I heard it CALLING someone randomly in my contacts. I then had a bit of a delirious sleep worrying about my my phone calling people and them being able to hear me snore. There doesn't seem to be much help for this problem on the apple forums.

And besides that....yeh. Not with it today. Don't feel here, there or even on this planet. :S Can I feel human again please?

It's only frickin Wednesday and I've heard about 3 deaths already. First was a schoolgirl struck down by a truck in Kings Heath, just 5 minutes down the road from my house. Yesterday I discovered a client of ours happened to be in that horrific M5 crash. And today I just heard my old best friends little brother had died. It's all rather grim. :(

When copywriters go bad (well almost)

My copywriter Jenny sits opposite me. We share the same phone and whenever someone rings us they always get mixed up even though Jenny has a much posher telephone voice than me. In fact, some people would say her real voice might as well be her telephone voice.

Today her computer started making a sound like it's about to take off. It's so loud that the other creatives thought the constant whirring was the faint sound of DIY going on next door. IT tried their usual trick saying to turn it off and on again but after excitable Ben the IT guy came up to inspect, he confirmed it's, pretty much, fucked it. Which might probably mean that she'll be getting a sparkly new mac. A MAC. WITH INDESIGN. Which means, pretty much, that my job has, fucked it.

Unless they give her a PC.

Lots of tech (IOS 5)

I was a proper geek and stayed up late the other night to get the new IOS 5. Very snazzy. At first glance it doesn't seem like a dramatic change but there's actually tonnes of improvements which makes it feel like a brand new phone for a while. :) The new notification centre is great! I had a text (or should I SAY iMESSAGE! *geek snort*) off a friend saying that IOS 5 wasn't even that different. An hour later I had another message off the same friend saying 'wow I just found the pull down menu.' I haven't tested out the location based reminders but I think they'll be very handy. The new facebook update is especially cool with a twitter style side bar.
In other news....life needs shaking up a bit, I'm unfulfilled.

October weekend recap

I spent the weekend in a remote part of Wales at a friend's parent's cottage. Eight of us convoyed down in two Volvos and with no phone signal or internet we entertained ourselves with games of Articulate and Ring of Fire, watching Home Alone and making trance and 80s synth tracks on an old microKorg and glockenspiel.

Hence why the the highlight of my Monday so far is eating a Halloween Creme Egg with green fondant.

Oh. An interesting point discussed whilst walking out in the woods. We are amongst a very small fraction of our generation who will remember the sound of dial up internet.

I am genuinely upset at the news of Steve Jobs' passing. Apple has been engrained into my life long before the new generations of iphones and ipads. Our first family computer was the Macintosh and I can even remember the old interface with the load up screen, blocky windows and plonky error sounds. Playing solitaire. And then came the iMac. Wow, that seemed revolutionary at the time. Hours were spent playing Bugdom. I bloody loved that game! And using Quark on the eMacs at college. And my dads first ipod where the menu buttons were separate from the click wheel. My pocket money couldn't keep up with the technology as I was still using my iMac with the swivel dome base at uni but now, typing this, every direction I look in the office I see Apple. And it is all thanks to one man. I wonder how the world of design would look without all Steve Jobs has done for us.

There are many people far more eloquent than me who can put this sadness into words so I will leave you with this.

Drive

Not really a fan of Ryan Gosling after getting my hopes up about the The Notebook. (I was told it was a tear jerker. I thought it was a pile of shit.) But his performance in Drive was easily more than watchable. Not a massive lots happens and it's quite brutal in places but its refreshing to watch a story that doesn't scream Hollywood budget with a shit, predictable plot. If anything, go watch it for its amazing soundtrack done by Cliff Martinez. Definitely makes the film.

The weather is lovely this week but I couldn't resist buying this gorgeous coat form Zara today. Also bought another pair of high waisted jeans after my old pair had a broken zip and were a bit too short in the leg. (That's the bugger with being too tall for the petite section but a fraction too small for regular sized jeans!)

I have the navy version of this. It's waxed with a hood and removable inner waistcoat. And it's bound to keep me properly protected from the real English weather yet to come!

At the weekend I bought myself a new bike! I haven't had a (working) bike since I was about 10 so I felt like a kid at Christmas when I got it home. (That reminds me of a memory that makes me chuckle...the year I had my first bike without stabilisers was also the year my brothers received bikes too. It was Christmas day and we ran into the kitchen where 3 shiny new bikes were waiting for our extremely delighted younger selves. Ben, my brother, straight away sat on his bike in excitement only to be told that the lovely purple bike he was sitting on was in fact MINE and his was the red and yellow one next to it. Hahahhahaha GUTTED BEN.)

Anyway...I'd been looking for a nice second hand bike for agessss so when I saw this one outside the bike shop I snapped it up. I've only been on it twice though because I've been a busy bee and haven't had chance to ride it but hopefully tonight it'll get a proper thrashing, ha!

It's soooo blooodyy cute, I love it! (I got flies in my mouth riding along the canal on Saturday because I was so smiley!)

Life In A Day

I got round to watching Life In A Day last night. I say got round to it, I had to turn it off half way through and save it for another night when I'm less sleepy because I was enjoying it that much. It's a brilliant concept for a film; people were asked to film their own life in a day on 24th July 2010 and upload it to youtube. The most interesting picks were then edited together to create a truly diverse and uplifting story told through the lives of thousands of people across the globe. I have no idea how it ends yet but if the first half is anything to go by it's one of the best feel good documentaries I've seen in ages.

Waterfall Woods

On Friday night Rog and I made a spur of the moment decision to find somewhere to go wild swimming. After looking on the internet we found directions for a place called Waterfall Woods, somewhere close to the Brecon Beacons in Wales. We set off the next morning with tent, swimming stuff, dry clothes and picnic intact. Rog also had his geeky clipboard complete with directions to the waterfalls at the ready!

After almost a few hours driving we reached our destination, rain pouring down but not dampening our adventurous spirits. Donning our coats and rucksacks and feeling like a true pair of ramblers, we set off into the gated entrance of the woods following the printed instructions we had. I got excited as soon as I heard the sound of rushing water just coming from the river. Even the first shallow parts looked clear and swimmable. You know in The Goonies where they find that waterfall and go down those amazing waterslides into the secret caves and see the lost pirate ship for the first time? (Rog wouldn't, as he's never seen The Goonies and he revels in this.) Well that's what it felt for me seeing the first waterfall in those woods. Absolutely magical. Metres of cascading water hidden amongst this luscious woodland and perfectly accesible to swim in. We decided to keep going though as the notes said there was an even better swimming spots.

After a bit of a goof trek we found the 'horseshoe falls' which the notes describe as a 'fantastic set of deep forest plunge pools beneath a horseshoe-shaped waterfall.' But we kept on going and found a calmer place which didn't seem to be described in the book, a wider and more sheltered waterfall flowing into a nice, deep pool. Despite the drizzle and being drenched, the walk had warmed us up enough to swim. We got changed and I tested my feet in the water. It was absolutely bloody freeeeeezing! I like to think I can handle cold water but that was just unbearable. Even knowing we had just drove 2 or more hours, walked another hour on foot and got absolutely soaked to find this, we knew it wasn't worth getting hypothermia so very reluctantly we admitted defeat and missioned all the way back to the car arriving tired, drenched, cold and starving. We didn't bother camping in the end. Did consider sleeping in my car but just drove back home. It was most definitely worth the journey though. I think next time I return it'll be with a drysuit or at least when it's sunny.

I seem to be watching lots of genuinely good films recently. My latest instalment is Hanna, a film about a teenage German spy girl who is being hunted down by Cate Blanchett. It's filmed and edited brilliantly, done in such a way that keeps it interesting and fast paced. The acting is also really good. I think the plot on paper could be done terribly in the wrong hands so I have to give it to the director (Joe Wright) for turning this potentially awful script into something captivating. Trailer below.

Clearing out old memories

My parents are moving house this week :( so I went round yesterday to pick up a few bits and bobs. I discovered some interesting items on my travels, embarrassing photos of younger me, a mobile phone case with the word 'flirt' on it and more nostalgically, my old dolls house!

My parents hand built this for me for sixth Christmas. I was a bit shocked and the neglected state of it but I was even more shocked at the kind of dolls I used to play with! The grandma looks like an old man with a backwards dress and some long hair!!!? And that sorry looking baby. WTF?

I asked my mum why on earth she bought me these. Was it because we were mega poor or something? She said it was because they were the only dolls available at the time. Maaaaaannnnnn we were ghetto. I absolutely loved that dolls house at the time though, it had working lights and everything. I remember coming downstairs on xmas eve and asking my Dad what he was doing when he was gluing tiles to the roof haha!

He was kayaking in France and had all his camera equipment and lenses in a 'waterproof bag' only it wasn't waterproof, it was splashproof. This is it after he took it apart to see the damage. Saltwater had got inside and oxidised, completely ruining all of his stuff.

Ahhh the comfort of blogging from my own bed, slightly hungover on a Saturday morning. God I'm sad! :) I do try and update this regularly though and seeing as my last blog posts were about the riots I figured I needed to write about something else.

Some friends of ours moved into their first new flat this week. Now they have the dreaded 'M' word (mortgage, shhhh) and they'll probably be popping out a few babies soon, my boyfriend and I made them a little house warming present to commerate their grownupness. Combining their last names (a la Brangelina) I typeset this cute sign and my boyfriend lasercut it out of steel and powder coated it a homely eggshell white. :P You can't see on the pic but we also added a chain to it so it hangs nicely from their wall. (I should add that if anyone would like a custom made steel sign for a cheap price then let me know!)

My friend Matt came to visit me one lunchtime this week. He's training to be an aircraft technician for the RAF so I don't get to see him very much. In fact, I don't get to see most of my friends very much because they all live in separate places too far away. This makes me sad. :( Anyway, it was great catching up with him, despite tales of his Magaluf holiday and when he left he gave me a present. It was my De La Soul cd he had borrowed yonks ago and was finally returning! But as an extra gift he had gotten me the same t-shirt :D thanks Matt!

Yesterday afternoon I was tipped off that riots might be happening at the Bullring later that evening and it'd be worth getting some photos. That was all the information I had but little did I know the full extent of the situation about to happen. I was an hour away from the scene but I rushed over, managed to persuade my French housemate whom I've never had a conversation for more than 30 seconds with to come with me. Even I knew it would be idiotic to go it alone. He even lent me his 7D as I had just borrowed mine to my brother. How naively trusting but extremely kind of him!

With nothing to go off except twitter rumours, we headed out by car to try and get as close to Primark as we could as we'd heard it had been set on fire. By now (9pm-ish) it had properly kicked off. Helicopters were flying above the city centre and most roads were fully blocked off by police so we had a mission parking anywhere. As we set off on foot and regretting not wearing a bigger coat to hide the massive Canon it seemed like we had missed the most of it. Cyber Candy was smashed in and a bit of Whetherspoons but no action shots for us. The road to Primark was completely blocked off...there was no blagging press passes at all for this one. Hundreds of obscured faced youths were still hanging around though and just as we considered going somewhere else, they starting smashing H&M store front. My heart was pounding quite a bit as I tried to figure out the camera settings but in the end I just left it playing on video. Someone clocked the camera though so we dispersed hence very shaky floor footage. A few lads had some rather intimidating dogs with them too. Standing and watching for a bit as the police arrive and the crowd breaks up, some guy with his face covered by a stupid wig starts confronting us and we panic a bit. We stay close to security, paranoid that he's told his friends and split up to watch where we go. We make a hasty decision to walk alongside a security guy who's escorting a crying lady and head back to the car.

A bit further out we see a cameraman and a news reporter setting up. I cheekily ask them for a press pass in exchange for our photos but he gets arsy with me and tells me what I'm doing is illegal. I saw these pictures later on of them. Looks like I had more wits about me than he did somehow. Turns out they're from ITV. (Not sure when these were taken, it looks like morning aftermath?)

Me and my housemate headed back to his car. On our way out we got mega lucky and saw huge crowds heading towards the mailbox about to go down. We quickly parked up and headed over there just in time to witness them smashing through the Armani store! Some guy shouted my housemate, started to chase us so we legged it up the escalators and through the mailbox. I don't think my heart has raced that much in my life! The guy gave up and we reached a family coming out of a locked up Nandos. We told them not to go the way we had came so the manager locked them back in. Some other passerby asked us about what was going on, I showed him a snippet of footage but said we needed to get out of here asap. We had to go a back way to the car. At this point my housemate gets a call from his friends saying she needed picking up because she was scared so we got her and left the rioters to continue undocumented. It's just gone 12pm the next day, I'm tired and I can still hear the occasional police siren. I dread to think about how much damage has been caused.

Weyyyyyyy!

Not a girls-on-tour stylee to Magaluf though. It's a bit more cultured than that. In about 8 hours I'll be on a plane to Morocco! Woooohoooooo. Marrakech and Essaouira to be precise. That's about all I know as I haven't done ANY of the organising (which is nice!) so I don't even know what hotel I'll be staying in. I do know that it'll be Ramadan though.

Quite excited and I'm gagging for a 'proper' holiday. So looks like no blog posts for about a week or so. But until then, I'll leave you with a lol of a picture...The first proper tattoo I did on my brothers friend.

Herrrrrowwww blog readers! This week has been a very busy one for myself work wise, hence the lack of posts. Any spare time I've had has been spent testing out the new 3D GoPro Hero system which is pretty wicked or eating wine and cheese and playing Doh-Nutters and ping pong. It's amazing how euphoric you can feel at 36,000 feet, above the clouds as if looking down from heaven. Despite being sat behind a screaming child on my flight back to Birmingham, I put my headphones in and had perfect time to reflect the past 9 days. I was glad to be going home but also sad to be leaving Cannes. If it's your first time there you almost need a week to learn how Cannes works. And then another week to do it all over again. I have learnt so much and enjoyed every second of it. Not to mention meeting some amazing people and hopefully new friends. I'm so grateful to have been given the opportunity to be at the creative centre of the universe for that one moment in time. Sir Ken Robinson made me fall in love with advertising again. Sarah Kay helped me remember what it was like to truly feel emotion. Patti Smith had me hanging on her every word and Sir John Hegarty brought it home how we should firmly be striving to be different. There is so much more to mention and on the plane I had it all written down. But sleep deprived and back to reality, it's hard for me to recreate that epiphany more than a day later in a blog post. I guess that's why I'm not the writer :) Cannes, I will miss you, I promise I will find a way to return next year! xxx

So tonight will be my last night in Cannes! :( The Ogilvy talk by Sir Ken Robinson yesterday was definitely the best one I have saw so far. Such a warm, funny man and so inspiring. Spent a lovely time on a yacht last night with the rest of the UK guys and met some other funny characters. Blagged ourselves into the German party haha. (Don't know how, they asked to see our business card which if you haven't seen is very ridiculous.) Sadly no getting into the Shots party. You can go if you subscribe to their magazine but subscription is like what...only a good grand or more. I'm sure it wasn't THAT good. Sadly ate a McDonalds. Again. French McDonalds is terrible! Anyway, I'm off to go watch the Grey and Patti Smith seminar followed by the BBH one. Should be good! MASSIVE AMOUNTS OF PICS AND VIDEO UP SOON! XxxX

Day 6 I hear you say? What happened to days 2,3,4 and 5? They're all captured across various cameras at the moment but I'll be posting videos up hopefully soon. Ok so let me give you a low down.

Saturday - Exploring. Given our Young Lions briefing at 5pm. Client was Pump Aid. They wanted us to create a print ad that would raise awareness of what they did and get people to donate money. They also said they wanted us to include a direct debit form on the ad. Oh and did I mention they'd really like it if we could redesign their logo too. Riiiiight. H'Ok. We also had an Adobe tutorial where the programme menus were in French so I couldn't keep up! From then onwards me and Jenny spent all night thinking of an idea getting very little sleep.

Sunday- Day of competition. After plenty of worrying, decide on our idea and arrive nice and early to get into the competition zone. Start the day off with a smoothie from the Youtube bar (you could have as many as you wanted and they were FREE!) Spend 12 hours glued to a mac. Print. Worry idea isn't simple enough. Annoyed at ourselves. (That's what Cannes makes you do. It makes you feel like your work is absolutely dreadful and to strive for better. It's a good thing.) Leave comp zone and head straight to meet the other UK teams and guys from The Guardian. Drink. Gutter Bar. Regret missing dinner.

Monday - Day of judging. Ask Jenny the time. Half 8. Fuck fuck fuckkkkkkkkk. Jog to the Salle de Press complete with shades to hide eyes. Waiting around. Too hungover to get nervous. Get called into the press room. Surprised at how many international judges there are. Winners announced. Bronze, United Arab Emirates. Silver, Italy. Gold....Australia. Feel that sinking feeling that comes from losing when you're naturally competitive. Can't help but notice the winning work was very copy based despite advice given to us about keeping it visual because of the language barriers. Nevermind. We live and learn from our mistakes and now I only want to try harder. Spend rest of the day on the beach. Vitamin D seems to cure depression but leave with very painful sunburn after not putting on high enough suncream. Go for lovely stone baked pizza down the road. Sleep finally catches up on us so lamely have an early night :(

Tuesday - Happy I decided to have the early night. Attend my first ever Cannes seminar. It's a TED talk about 'The Meaning of the Connect Experience.' Last speaker, a poet called Sarah Kay manages to bring a tear to my eye. Completely off guard on that one but blown away that a seminar actually almost made me cry! Stay for Youtube seminar. Jenny takes part in a green screening remake of the Old spice ad. (See vid!) Go to Young Lions Zone and watch a talk by guys from AMV BBDO. Go to Hill & Knowlton seminar called 'What Brands Can Learn from Angry Birds.' Very informative and funny! Go back to hotel, get ready. Eat amazing tapas. Go Young Lions Party. Meet everyone else. Go Friendly Fires party next beach along. Feel important walking into VIP :) Free drinks all night. Get wasted. Go Gutter Bar. Eat rum & raisin and bubble gum icecream. See a guy with the biggest bottle of wine I've ever saw in my life. Couple of feet high, no exaggerating. Someone walks into bottle. Smashes all over the pavement. Bedtime: 5am.

Wednesday - Completely oversleep. Feel terrible. Not that hungover but sunburn still kills. Really disappointed I missed the MoFilm seminar :( Plan to make up for it tomorrow.

Don't know why I'm talking Spanish for, it's bloody France I'm heading and I don't know a single word of French! So I'm currently at Birmingham International airport with Jensoir drinking coffee and eating croissants (all preparation) whilst we wait to check in. God I hate waiting. Still not fully excited yet but I never get excited until moments before when I'm on the plane. Managed to remember everything (I think) although I'm worried I'm gonna have a Home Alone moment mid flight. ('Shhhhiiiiitttt Jennnnyyyy, we forgot Macaulay Culkin!') Right. I'm off to see how overweight my suitcase is. Au Revior. ?
